Betty Sue (Pulis) Oakley, 73, of San Antonio, Texas, passed from this life on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at 7:25 am.
Betty was born on September 29, 1946 in La Pryor, Texas, to Robert and Vesta Pulis. She was one of ten children. Due to the nature of her father’s work her family was relocated often throughout Texas and Oklahoma.
Betty attended Lytle High School and there met Nolan (Butch) Oakley. During her sophomore year her family once again had to relocate to New Braunfels, however, Butch was determined and continued dating Betty.
When Betty’s father had finished his work there he was again relocated to Del Rio. Distance made it difficult for Butch but he continued to see Betty during this time. When the news of another relocation came Butch asked her father for her hand in marriage and he approved. Betty and Butch were married in Seminole, Texas, July 16,1962.
Returning to Lytle, Betty became a waitress at Bloom’s Café for a short time. Upon leaving the café she began working for the Handy Andy grocery store chain in San Antonio, where she worked her way up to Office Manager in charge of training new employees. After 18 years she took up a new career as a teller for Lytle State Bank where she worked until she retired. While working for the bank, Betty also served her community by serving on the Lytle School Board.
Upon retiring, Betty and Butch moved to Ratliff City, Oklahoma, where they bought a 160-acre ranch and enjoyed raising cattle and spending time with Betty’s brothers and sister living in the area. After the death of her two brothers and a drought in the area they sold the ranch and moved to Sulphur, Oklahoma. While in Sulphur Betty’s health declined and they returned to Texas in 2019.
She is survived by her husband Nolan A. Oakley; daughter Kimberley S. Hulsey (Jack); her son Nolan (Chris) Oakley (Summer); grandchildren: Nathan K. Hulsey, (Amy), Trenton G. Hulsey, Nolan R. Hulsey (Ashlee); great grandchildren: Liam R. Hulsey, Finn A. Hulsey, Brailey S. Hulsey; and her sister Phillis Bartlett (David).
Betty’s funeral service will be at 1:00 pm on Monday, September 28, 2020 at Woodlake Baptist Church, 6980 Woodlake Club Drive, San Antonio, Texas. Interment will be at San Fernando Cemetery #3 following the service.
