He attended nearly a dozen different colleges and universities obtaining a bachelors degree from Texas Christian University and a Masters degree from The University of Texas at Austin. He especially loved basketball, football, boxing, volleyball, baseball, golf, and track & field. He was an excellent boxer in Texas Golden Gloves and in Navy competition and was a knowledgeable and competent basketball player making the college team at TCU. Mr. Farquhar was always quick to point out that all of the progress and improvements made at the Marion schools during and after his tenure could not have been accomplished without the hard work and dedication of the school board, the teachers, administration, and staff of the school, and the support of the whole Marion community. Farquhar was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. After going through vigorous training at Annapolis, he spent most of his military service working with a Navy Psychiatrist at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Even during his academic studies, he was working " mostly with psychiatrists and psychologists in Fort Worth at Harris Hospital and for the department head at his private offices and in Austin at Oak Ridge Sanitarium. He was born in Whitney Texas in 1923 to parents of Scottish descent. His father, Tommie D. Farquhar, born 8/3/1897, died at age 44 on 8/26/1941. His mother, Lessie Lee Goodlett Farquhar Garrett, born 10/30/1897 lived to be 96 when she died on 4/27/1994. His older brother Darwin and his sister Martha, the youngest of the siblings, died before him. His younger brother Jim still lives in Georgia with his wife Beth near their daughter Sally. Mr. Farquhars wife, Maria Guadalupe Farquhar, was the joy of his senior years. Their life together was full of joy, love, dancing, and laughter " even in the difficult times life presents. Her caretaking of him during his last months, weeks, and days was the very definition of unselfish love, respect and admiration. Mr. Farquhars former wife Betty died in 2008. They met and married in Austin prior to arriving in Marion. Their children still live in the area " Frank (Nickie) in Seguin, Mike and his wife Sandra in San Antonio, and Cynthia (CJ) and her husband Dr. Winston G Morrow in Seguin. Betty and Maria became great friends " attending family gatherings together and Maria assisting Betty with medical appointments. Marias children also consider Mr. Farquhar their father. They are sons Victor Guerrero, Rudy Guerrero and his wife Anna, all in San Antonio and daughter Iris Alexander of Austin. Farquhars grandchildren include Sheena Danielle Clark, Jason Atzenhoffer, Loren Augustine, Patrick Augustine and Jennifer Augustine. Great grandchildren include Sheena & Derek Clarks three daughters Shyla, Layla, & Bella and Jason Atzenhoffers three children Michael Antonio Salazar, Jason Atzenhoffer, Jr. and Catarina Cortes. The many children of Dr. Morrow including James, John, Johns wife Callie and their son Jett further extend the family. The family is blessed to have extended family in the Clark family of New Braunfels and the Stewart family of Stockdale (through Shyla and Laylas proud and loving father, Dustin Stewart, whose spirit is still with us). The extended family of Mr. Farquhars wife Maria always welcomed him into their family with affection, respect and appreciation.
