William Clayton
April 16, 1949 — January 31, 2017
William Henry Clayton, known to all as "Bill" passed peacefully away into eternal life on Tuesday, January 31, 2017. His partner of eighteen years, Sherry and his good friend Catherine were at his bedside in his home.
Bill was born of William Arthur Clayton and Juanita Nell Belangee on April 16, 1949 in Alton, IL. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, ex-wife, Rebecca Clayton as well as many friends. He is survived by his partner, Sherry Brooks; daughter, Cheri and husband Danny; son, Billy "Cody" and wife Rebecca; stepdaughter, Serenity and husband Roger; ten grandchildren, DeLynne, Barbara, John, Patrick, Taylor, Aly, Zoe, Josiah, Berea and James; three great- grandchildren, Hunter, Timothy and Charlotte; sisters, Brenda and Joyce; cousin, Pat and numerous extended family.
Bill joined the U.S. Army and served his country proudly on two tours to Vietnam. He received medals and commendations. He was commended for assisting with the start up of a new hospital in Okinawa, Japan. There he assisted with innovations in the respiratory department. Most of his time was spent in the nursing field at BAMC. He worked in the medical research and he taught field medic courses at the Academy of Health Sciences. At BAMC he worked as an LVN in the burn unit and accompanied patients on burn flights being flown into BAMC. Bill loved his work, it was his life. He retired after 20 years as a Sergeant First Class, E7. He went on to work at the Sportsman's Bailiwick where he enlarged his love of his past and present hobbies: running, shooting, golfing, fishing, harvesting, gunsmith and reloading. Bill then took a position with Baptist Northeast Hospital where he worked for 26 years. He worked in the ICU, CCU, PACU, and OR before his last position in the Special Processing Department. Ironically, his last position with Baptist was the same as his first one with the Amy. He had gone full circle. He was a good man who will be missed by all. When asked how he wanted to be remembered Bill said "I Am A Soldier". A memorial service with full Military Honors will be held on Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with the service beginning promptly at 9:30AM and ending at 10:00AM. All are welcome. In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial donations be made to the Purple Heart Foundation or the Cancer Society.
