William Elbert Boswell (“Bill”) passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 27, 2022. He was born on April 19, 1932, the youngest of 8 children, and was raised on a country farm in North Zulch, Madison County, Texas.
Bill enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and served aboard the USS Menard (Attack Transport) during the Korean War, the USS Pollux (Supply Ship), the USS Henry B. Wilson (Guided Missile Destroyer), and the USS Wasp (Aircraft Carrier) as well as numerous shore duty assignments. He received the following decorations: Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, China Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards).
It was while stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas that he met his future bride to be June Wren of Mathis, Texas. They married on August 17, 1956 and raised two children and the four of them shared in the experiences of a Navy family until Bill retired in 1972 as a Master Chief with over 22 years of service.
Following his Navy retirement, Bill and June moved back to their native state of Texas and settled in San Antonio. Bill attended and graduated from St. Marys University in 1975 with a Business Administration degree. Bill worked for many years for Exxon, managing a couple of Car Care Centers until he retired for good.
Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He liked tinkering in his garage, doing some woodworking like crafting chairs for his grandkids and building bird houses, and he liked working in the yard. He loved to talk and tell his “sea” stories and he never met a “stranger”. Bill and June enjoyed traveling, working around the house, cooking out for family, and they found special enjoyment in their grandkids’ activities.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife, June, his parents Elbert and Dora Boswell, his sisters Thelma, Ella Mae, Louise and Ethel, and his brothers Olin, Elton, and Thurman. He is survived by his son David Boswell and wife Elizabeth,
daughter Karen Cannon and husband Mark, his grandchildren Brittany, Matthew (Miranda), Christy (Ben), Rachel, and Michael.
Bill’s services are still pending. His final resting place will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery alongside his wife, June.
Bill was a long time survivor of cancer. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial donation to the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center which is one of the world’s most respected centers devoted exclusively to cancer patient care, research, education and prevention
