Vernon Standley, Sr.

February 26, 1932 — September 17, 2013

Vernon Edward Standley, Sr. went to be with the Lord on September 17, 2013 at the age of 81. He was born on February 26, 1932 in Dallas, Texas. He was formerly from the Texas Hill Country area, and later settled in San Antonio. He passed away in his residence in Schertz, Texas surrounded by loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Joyce Standley, as well as 9 children, son, Vernon Standley, Jr., daughter Dorothy Standley, daughter, Kelly Berry and husband Ben, daughter Helen Simecek and husband Roger, daughter Patricia Riggs, daughter June McCaleb and husband Larry, daughter Mary Rodriguez and husband Phillip, son James Riggs, Jr. and wife Jean, and daughter Bobbie Fowler and husband Ronny, along with 23 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Laverne. He was preceded in death by both his father and mother H.J. and Lorena Standley and one brother, William. He was a veteran of the United States Army. After serving in the United States Army, he became well known as "Fiddlin' Vernon Standley" to many people around Texas, mostly in Campwood, Leakey and Uvalde area from the years of playing country music with many friends and country bands. As most people know, he was a man of many trades and enjoyed tinkering with anything and everything outdoors as well as, fishing and boating. He never met a stranger and will be remembered by everyone for his one of a kind, humorous personality. Visitation will be at Schertz Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 4:00PM to 8:00PM. Funeral Service will be at Schertz Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at 10:00AM. Interment to follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 11:45AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
