Verna Gifford
March 15, 1954 — April 5, 2011
Verna Sue Gifford went to be with the Lord on April 5, 2011, at the age of 57. She was born on March 15, 1954 in San Antonio, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Thelma Gifford of Schertz, TX. She is survived by her sister, Lynda June Gaskill and her husband, Stephen of Schertz, TX. Verna Sue graduated from Samuel Clemens High School, Schertz, TX in 1972. She then attended the University of Texas, Austin, TX where she received her degree in Math and Science. She also received a degree in Engineering from Virginia Tech University while assigned to the Pentagon. Following graduation from the University of Texas, she was a High School Math Teacher at Randolph High School, Randolph AFB, TX, until 1984. She then moved to Washington, DC and was employed by the Defense Department at the Pentagon, until 2000. She retired from Civil Service in 2000 and returned to Schertz, TX where she made her home until her death. Verna Sue was an avid doll collector and took great pride in her collection. Visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home, Schertz, TX between 5 and 9 PM on Monday, April 11, 2011. Memorial Services will be held at the First Baptist Church, Schertz, TX at 10 AM on Tuesday, April 12, 2011. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, 7735 Gibbs-Sprawl Road, San Antonio, TX. In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to: The American Kidney Foundation or the Wounded Warriors Project, Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX.
