Velma Aniol

March 5, 1934 — December 7, 2011

Velma Ida (Haecker) Aniol was born on March 5, 1934 and passed away on December 7, 2011 at the age of 77. She was a precious wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and godmother. Velma passed from complications of Alzheimers. She is preceded in death by her husband Peter (Sonny) Aniol Jr.; her parents Richard and Elsa (Albrecht) Haecker; mother and father- in-law Peter Aniol Sr. and Regina (Wyrwich) Aniol; her brothers Ray, Nelson, and Richard Jr. (Whitey); her sister Jeanette Dietert, sister-in-law Sophie Craft and brothers-in-law Douglas Stolleis and Bill Craft. She is survived by her daughter Gail and husband Steve Robinette; daughter Colleen Aniol; grandchildren Eric and wife Whitney, Michael, and Kristen Robinette; brothers Clarence (Bernadette) and Jock (Patsy); sisters Lorene (Tootie) Haecker, Betty (Buster) Strzelczyk, Vernell (Aaron) Theilengerdes, Myrtle Hild, and Genny Stolleis; brother and sister-in-law Otto and Emma (Aniol) Radtke; brother-in-law Daniel Dietert; sister- in- law Jeanette Moody, Jimmie Haecker, and numerous nieces and nephews. Velma was raised on a farm in Marion, Texas where she was born and lived with her parents, grandparents and 11 siblings. She attended Clemens School, graduated from Seguin High School and worked at the Alamo National Bank in downtown San Antonio. She married her sweetheart, Peter (Sonny) Aniol, Jr. on January 11, 1958, had two daughters and shared their lives on a farm in St Hedwig, Texas until Petes untimely death at age 43 in 1977. She began working for the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier in 1975 at the Adkins Post Office and later retired as a supervisor from the Seguin Post Office in 2004 after 29 years of dedicated service. Velma always thought of others before herself and strangers were only friends she had not yet met. Even though she worked long hours on the farm and at the post office she managed to always have time for her family and friends. Her relatives and co-workers benefited from her kindness by receiving cards, baked goods, or a phone call on special occasions such as birthdays and wedding anniversaries which was no small feat for a family her size. She was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Because Gails husband Steve was in the Air Force, Velma did not get to see her grandchildren as often as she would have liked. So, many of her vacations were spent visiting various places around the United States. The only place she didnt visit was during Gails two years in Korea. Velma was a tremendous cook and was especially known for her cakes and desserts. Velma was a member of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in St. Hedwig, Texas where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Rosary Society. When Velma was stricken with Alzheimers, she lived for a time with her daughter Colleen in Converse, Texas and then with her daughter Gail and her family in Utah and Virginia. For the last five years of her life, her home was at Esplanade Gardens Assisted Living Facility in Converse, Texas. She was in the facilitys Memory Care Unit where she was introduced to the rest of her family. On the night of December 7th, she finally succumbed to the disease which had robbed her of her memory, and eventually the ability to walk or talk. She slipped away peacefully listening to Oh, Holy Night. Her passing leaves an ache in the heart of all those who loved and cared for her deeply. This will eventually heal as we recall all of the many ways she touched our lives and find comfort in the knowledge that she is now free, healthy, and HOME. Visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on Sunday, December 11, from 5 -9 PM with a rosary and eulogy at 7 PM. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 12, at 10:30 at the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in St. Hedwig, Texas with interment to follow at the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association at www.alz.org.
