Valdemar V. “Val” Garcia, age 88, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly at University Hospital in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. Val was born on July 26, 1936, to his mother Trinidad and father Jacob Garcia in Clareville, Texas.
Val enlisted in the United States Air Force (USAF) in 1955, and he would honorably retire as a Master Sergeant (E-7) with 21 years of service. During his military career, Val served at US Air Force bases in Arizona, Colorado, Maryland and Texas and several tours of duty at overseas locations in England, Germany, Japan and Vietnam. During Val’s military service, he was the recipient of the Air Force Achievement medal, Air Force Commendation medal and Joint Service Commendation medal.
After retiring from the USAF, Val joined the U.S. Civil Service and retired after serving 22 years. During his time in the civil service, Val was based in Stuttgart, Germany and San Antonio, Texas. His primary duties included setting up commissary operations and working in the enlisted testing section at the Air Force Personnel Center.
Val was an avid purchaser of cars and trucks and enjoyed visiting and maintaining his property in Beeville, Texas. Val also enjoyed watching TV shows like Gunsmoke and The Price Is Right.
Val was a proud military veteran and civil servant who loved his country. But what made Val proudest and happiest was his family.
Val is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Bonnie; 1 son, Kenneth and wife, Charlotte Barrett, of Schertz, Texas and 1 daughter, Kristy and her husband Clay Jones, of El Mirage, Arizona; 2 brothers, Rafael Garcia and Rueben Garcia and his wife, Norma, both of Corpus Christi, Texas and 1 sister, Trinidad Garcia of Houston, Texas. Val is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Val is preceded in death by his mother and father, daughter, Valerie, 14 brothers and 5 sisters.
A public viewing will be held for Val at the Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, Texas, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, November 14, 2024. Interment, with Full Military Honors, will be conducted at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas on Friday, November 15, 2024, at 9:15 a.m.
