Toleka Johnson
April 2, 1922 — April 2, 2015
Toleka Mayo Johnson is a native of Milwaukee, WI and there she was born and reared by her parents Edward and Mary Sears Johnson. In the mid 1940's, she enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, which later became the Women's Army Corps (WACs) to pursue her dream of military service and becoming a nurse in the healthcare profession. She pursued a degree in nursing while attending Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, FL. For 42 years, Toleka served faithfully in the nursing profession she truly loved. Her formative years in nursing were spent at the old Robert B. Green Hospital in downtown San Antonio, and she later went into private care in and around the San Antonio area. Toleka was a devout Christian of the Roman Catholic faith and a woman of extraordinary spiritual strength for the love of God. She ensured her children grew up with a sense of the divine and Faith in God. One of the proudest moments in her life was the day she became a Lay Eucharistic Minister (LEM) for the Catholic faith, and she served diligently at the Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) as a volunteer for a number of years. Toleka fostered a great relationship with the nuns of the former Our Lady of Victory School and consecrated her life to support the mission of the order and the school up until its closing. In later years, she became a regular at the 1130 Daily Mass of the Gift Main Post Chapel at Fort Sam Houston as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion. Congregants were well aware of Toleka's presence and were greatly appreciative for her steadfast support. Toleka loved and enjoyed helping people, even while living in the Autumn Winds Nursing Home. In her free time in her earlier years, Toleka enjoyed swimming, gardening, reading a good novel, and seeing a good movie at the famous downtown San Antonio Majestic Theater. She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward Benjamin Maney; her oldest son, Jon Paige; her granddaughter, Sheryl Hurt and grandson, Joe Taylor. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Newoker Adrian and Mimi Colette; sons Rhoi Michael (Letitia), Edward Kevin (Linda); and grandchildren, Carolyn, Kia, Shaanon, Sharon, Miranda, Samantha, Jordan, Joleka and a host of great grandchildren & great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her life has come to the fruition of her Faith to be in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, and we commend her for the love she gave to all who came to know her. A visitation will be held at the Schertz Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at 10:00AM with services to follow at 11:00AM. All services will conclude in the chapel.
