Thomas (Tom) Bodley Haines, 89, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2019. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas, on Sunday, December 22, 1929.
Tom graduated from Washington High School in Kansas City, Kansas on May 19, 1948. He enlisted in the Army during the Korean conflict in 1949, posted in Trieste, Italy, and was honorably discharged in 1952. After the Army, he enrolled in the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, Kansas and graduated on February 23, 1956 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Degree. He continued his education in Latin American Studies in Phoenix, Arizona and the University of Mexico. Tom directed his skills to Information Technology and worked in Lima, Peru for an American Silver Mining company as a production and systems analyst.
After studying and working abroad, Tom started his successful career in Information Technology as a programmer for IBM and US Census in New York. Faith intervened and Tom found the love of his life working in New York, and they were married on December 30, 1961. Tom had several information technology jobs in Kansas City, Milwaukee, and finally in Florida. After his retirement from Westinghouse in Coral Springs, Florida, they moved to Flagler Beach, Florida and they both had a wonderful life in the sand and sun of Flagler Beach. In January 2015 they moved to Schertz, Texas to be near their loving family.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Irene Haines, sisters Martha Lukenbill and Louise Sherman. He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Socorro Haines; son Sal Lara and wife Jeri; son Fernando Lara of Miami, Florida; grandchildren Eric Lara and wife Brianne; Rick Lara; Brian Lara, and Angie Lara of Miami, Florida; great-grandchildren Claire, Wesley, Trevor and Colette; brother Dr. Howard Haines and wife Cleo of Norman, Oklahoma and many sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
The loving support and friendship of Leila Valesquez and Veronica Lopez are most appreciated by his family.
Memorial Service will be held at 3:00PM on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association.
