Sylvester Hawkins
February 5, 1944 — June 9, 2010
Sylvester Londell Hawkins, was affectionately known as Syl to his family and Hawk to others. Sylvester was born in Houston, Texas on February 5, 1944. He was the first of six children born to Sylvester and Charlie Mae Hawkins. At the age of 6 years old he lived in Horatio, Arkansas where he attended Savier County Training School for one year. After which, he completed his elementary, secondary and high school education in the Houston Independent School District, graduating from Kashmere Senior High School. While at Kashmere he was a member of the band and the ROTC. After completing high school, he attended Texas Southern University for two years. He then decided to join the United States Air Force in 1963. Master Sergeant Hawkins served his nation honorably for 24 years, serving in critical jobs to include; military training instructor, courier, intelligence and etc., while assigned to various bases at home and abroad. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, and was stationed in the Phillipines, Korea and in Greece. His active duty service culminated with his retirement in 1986 on Randolph AFB Texas. After retiring, he joined the United States Postal Service where he served as a mail carrier. He spent many happy years at the U.S. Post Office and made several life long friends until he retired. Sylvesters happiest moments were spending time with his family and friends. The Hawk had many hobbies to include playing basketball in the N.B.A (Noon-time Basketball Association) and taking his beloved dog Chauncie wherever he went. But the things that brought him the most joy were fishing on his beloved boat with family and friends and cheering on his world champion Spurs and Cowboys. The Hawk had a great sense of humor, he loved sitting around the table telling funny jokes and captivating stories. His favorite song was Ill Always Love My Momma by the Intruders. Wherever he was stationed at home or overseas, he would always call his momma Charlie Mae and play that song for her. Sylvester leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife Emma Gene Hawkins of 46 years. His two daughters, Karen P. Porter (Fred), and Kristal D. Reedom. His Father Sylvester Hawkins and stepmother Margaret Hawkins of Houston, TX. His siblings Harold Hawkins Sr. (Virginia); Brenda Jones (James) of Houston, TX; Vivian Walton (Ricky) of Atlanta, GA; Paul Hawkins (Carla) of Houston, TX and Augusta Johnson (Albert) of Houston, TX. His grandchildren; David K. Reedom, Newport News, VA; Fred E. Porter III, Converse, TX; Jamila D. Thomas, Jaden P. Thomas, and Joseph S. Thomas, Killeen, TX. Two aunts Christine Hawkins, Berkley, CA and Evelyn Wheatley, Houston, TX and a brother-in-law Marion Jacob Bailey of Houston, TX. Additionally, 10 nieces and nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews and a host of cousins, family and friends to include his Bringhurst St. Family from the 5th Ward, Houston, TX. Finally, Sylvester was preceded in death by his mother, Charlie Mae Hawkins and his granddaughter Paris Patrice Porter, his nephew Kristopher Sylvester McGaffie and his son-in-law David K. Reedom Sr. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, TX 78154. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Resurrection Baptist Church, 1002 Live Oak Road, Schertz, TX 78154. Interment will follow at 2:00 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery .
