Steven Von Buettner

November 17, 1964 — December 24, 2022

Steven Kurt Von Buettner, 58, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2022 at his home in Schertz, Texas after a courageous 29-month battle with glioblastoma, with his loving wife and son by his side.

Steven was born November 17, 1964, in Wichita, Kansas, to Frederick Von Buettner and Bertha Von Buettner. He grew up in a military family and moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1976 at the age of 12, where he met three of his lifelong friends: Mike Kramer, Mike Ansley, and Willie Root.

During middle school and high school Steven loved playing soccer, listening to music, going to rock concerts, and playing the guitar with his friends. He graduated from Churchill High School with honors in 1983 and went on to attend college at University of Texas at San Antonio.  While attending college, Steven enrolled in the ROTC program and majored in Economics. Upon graduating he entered the USAF as a Second Lieutenant and became a Navigator on a KC-135 refueling aircraft.

In 1994 Steven met and married his wife of 28 years, Karen Elizabeth Holden-Von Buettner and soon had a son named Christian Jordan Von Buettner in 1995.

During his 21 years of service he traveled extensively around the world and eventually retired as a Major in 2011 from Joint Randolph AFB.

After enjoying a short retirement Steven went back to school at UTSA, took classes with his son, and obtained a second degree as a Math Instructor. He spent several years substitute teaching math to middle school students in NEISD, the district where he himself had attended school.

Over the years Steven continued to hone his guitar skills with his instructor and friend Art Villarreal. He had a lifelong passion for music, enjoyed keeping up with the Green Bay Packers and international soccer, and loved reading books on world history. He was a devoted father and hobbyist.

Mr. Von Buettner is preceded in death by his father Frederick Von Buettner. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Karen Holden Von Buettner, son Christian Von Buettner, mother Bertha Von Buettner, sister Lynn Von Buettner, brother Kurt (wife Kathy) Von Buettner, brother Kenneth Von Buettner (wife Christine) of Casper, Wyoming, father-in-law Wilson Browning Holden III, mother-in-law Gwyn Holden, brother-in-law Paul (wife Anita) Holden, and four nephews.
