Steven Purkey

March 23, 1949 — January 13, 2015

SMSgt. Steven Leon Purkey, United States Air Force (Ret.) passed away on January 13, 2015 at the age of 65 in San Antonio, Texas. Steven is preceded in death by his father, Chester, mother, Dorothy, and brothers, Jimmie and Chester, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Marie, sons, John Purkey, Steven Purkey, Jr., Eric Bankes, daughter, Elizabeth Bankes Rose, grandchildren, Levi, Victoria, Mackenzie, Addison, brother, Harold (Nancy), sisters-in-law, Peggy, Joan and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. Born in Wichita, Kansas on March 23, 1949, Steven graduated from Wichita North High School in 1967. He was a proud Vietnam veteran and retired from the Air Force in 1995 after 26 years of service. He then became an Air Force Junior ROTC instructor for Hahnville High School and East Jefferson High School near New Orleans, Louisiana, retiring after 14 years. A memorial service will be held at Schertz Funeral Home on Monday, January 26, 2015 from 4:00pm until 8:00pm. Graveside service will occur on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 11:15am at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
