Stella Louise Townsend of Schertz, Texas, passed away on the evening of June 25, 2024, at Sodalis Senior Living, a memory care facility, after an eight-year battle with dementia. Stella had been under Hospice comfort care since 2022. Born on October 20 in West Point, Mississippi, to parents Mary Alice and Earl Townsend, Stella graduated from Fifth Street High School in 1969. She later moved to Chicago, where she married Robert Evans, welcomed her first child, Sharon, and spent 19 years as a secretary at Sears. In 1990, she relocated to Cassopolis, Michigan, to wed Pastor Steven Weddington, becoming the first lady of Prayer Tower Mission and stepmother to Lewin and Daniel. Stella devoted her life to instilling the word of God in her children and the families at Prayer Tower Mission. She exemplified unconditional love, forgiveness, and living by faith, not sight. Stella was known for her encouraging words and her ability to make friends everywhere she went. Despite dementia's toll on her body, her love for Jesus remained unshaken. In 2011, she moved for the last time to take care of her granddaughter while her daughter was on an unaccompanied assignment in Korea. While in Texas, she worked for American General, selling insurance door-to-door, and it was there she met and married her beloved, George Herro. Stella was preceded in death by her husband, George Herro, her sister, Earlie May, and her parents. She leaves behind her siblings Bobbie Sylvester, Fred (Diane) Townsend, and Fay Bell; her children Sharon (Anthony) Douglas, Lewin (Lea) Weddington, and Daniel Weddington; her granddaughter Sarah (Nik Dye) Gillam; two great-granddaughters; and numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Sodalis Senior Living and the hospice team for their exceptional care. Instead of flowers, contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
