Stanley Birnbaum

December 14, 1937 — August 20, 2015

Stanley Allen Birnbaum, of Schertz, Texas, died on August 20, 2015, at the age of 77. Stanley was born on December 14, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Rose Birnbaum; and his sister, Beverly Birnbaum. Stanley grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Olney High School in 1956. In high school, he and his classmates danced on the original American Bandstand. After high school, Stanley joined the Air Force, earned his associate's degree and served at Donaldson AFB and Wiesbaden AFB. Back in the USA, Stanley met the love of his life and he and Shirley Birnbaum were married in June 1971 in Wichita Falls, Texas. During his 20 year Air Force career, Stan completed his bachelor's degree and served as a computer programmer, systems analyst and instructor. He was stationed at Sheppard AFB, Carswell AFB, McGuire AFB, Offutt AFB, and Randolph AFB. After retiring as a TSGT, he began a second career with the Department of the Air Force - Nonappropriated Funds. He retired from NAF in 2009 after 32 years and was so deeply missed, he was asked to come back as a consultant this past spring. Stanley was a warm and outgoing guy who made friends everywhere he went. Throughout Schertz, he greeted everyone by name as he ran errands around town in his car "Butch," often with his dog "Lucky," and in years later, "Little Bear" in tow. He loved corny jokes and gentle teasing and it was difficult to encounter Stan and not walk away with a smile. By far, the greatest pride in his life was his daughter Caroline Moore and his granddaughters, Gillian and Peyton Moore. He always had their pictures in his wallet and was quick to show off his girls. Later, he was delighted when Brittany House joined the family and he had a third granddaughter to dote on. Stanley was best described by his wife of 44 years as a "big teddy bear." Indeed, he was a large strong presence and protector of his family, yet he was also soft and cuddly. He will be deeply missed by so many, but we take comfort that he is at peace with God. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 4, 2015, at 10:00 AM, at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
