Sonya Rippy

September 18, 1937 — October 27, 2019

Sonya Apodaca Rippy, age 82 of Cibolo, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 27, 2019.  She was born on September 18, 1937 in Empalme, Sonora Mexico, to Octavio Apodaca Solis and Mercedes Matus Murillo.  Sonya was the youngest daughter within her siblings and that made her the apple of her father’s eye. She has always been known for smiling and being joyful.  At the age of eighteen she was crowned Empalme’s Beauty Pageant Queen.  She is looked up to for being independent and adventurous.  It was on a trip with her sister Elva to San Carlos Beach where she met Chester Prentiss Rippy, and they married in Guadalajara Mexico around 1958.  She completed Nursing School and started a family by having two children, a daughter Marjorie Mercedes Rippy and a son Tim Rippy. She was an impressive role model who taught others to be kind and strong willed, to be capable and not dependent.

When her children grew up, she spent time traveling between the two of them and her sister, who most times lived in separate states.  She made sure to leave impressions on all of the grandchildren in the family.  She was an Artist who loved to paint. She also enjoyed quilting and crafting. Many times, her sewing provided us with the best costumes or the most beautiful clothing for important events in our lives. She enjoyed attending theatre plays such as Phantom of the Opera and Opera concerts, especially Andrea Boccelli.  She was also a giver, and her charity of choice was St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, because their lifesaving mission is to find cures and save children.

Sonya was a Christian woman who had a golden heart and her hands radiated love when she would hold you. For our family, she held us together, she was our glue.  She gave us strength, and she connected us with God. She protected us and she always prayed for us. She is greatly loved by all who knew her and will be missed tremendously.

Sonya was preceded in death by her husband: Chester Prentiss Rippy; son: Tim Rippy; father: Octavio Apodaca Solis; mother: Mercedes Matus Murillo; and sister: Elva Apodaca Mills.  She is survived by her daughter: Marjorie Mercedes Rippy; granddaughters: Roxanne Victoria Rippy-Carlsten (Jared Carlsten), Suzanne Cassandra Rippy, Dominic Mercedes Mills, Donnica Maximillianna Mills, and Donna Marianna Mills; grandsons: Tyler Cory Mann, and Rowdy Sterling Rippy; great-granddaughter: Kimura Nesta Carlsten; great-grandson: Otto Remington Rippy, and Bryce Raymond Ogden; brothers: Octavio Apodaca Matus, Jorge Apodaca Matus and Hector Ruben Matus; nephew: Jeff Mills; daughter-in-law: Debra Ann Puckett-Stephens; as well as many other family members and friends
