Sonja Cook

September 15, 1962 — October 25, 2020

Sonja Cook, an incredible mother, wife, daughter, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 25, 2020 after a brief battle with a hemorrhagic brain aneurysm.

Sonja was born on September 15, 1962 in New Braunfels, Texas. She graduated from Canyon High School in 1981. While in high school, she met her life-long partner and husband Donald. After dating for one and a half years, Donald and Sonja were married in October 1982 in New Braunfels. Upon marrying, they moved to San Antonio to begin their life together. Over the years, Donald and Sonja welcomed into the world and raised their three daughters, Zandra, Brianna, and Arianna. Sonja was the heart of their home—volunteering at the girl’s schools and classrooms, maintaining the home, and making every moment and occasion in their lives special in every way.

After the passing of their youngest daughter, Arianna, in 2007, Sonja began to give more of her time to the church. As avid parishioners at St. Monica Catholic Church at that time, Sonja became involved with volunteering at the church office. Over the years, people began to realize that Sonja had an incredible and impeccable knack for decorating. She began to oversee all of the decorating for the church altar and sanctuary for every holiday and special occasion. Her favorite holidays to decorate for were Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. She also spent years making floral arrangements that were proudly displayed on the church altar, next to the tabernacle. In total, Sonja gave over 12 years of her time, love, and energy to making St. Monica’s a beautiful place for countless families to visit and worship at every week.

Sonja’s decorating and talents didn’t stop at church. Every holiday was made special in the Cook household with countless lights and decorations adorning their home. In particular, Christmas was always a sight to see in their house, thanks to Sonja’s hard work and tireless effort. Sonja was also the most incredible hostess. She loved and cherished having family and friends over to her home regularly, to enjoy a meal and share laughs and make countless memories together. She also so enjoyed gardening, taking day trips to explore small Texas towns and listening to endless hours country music.

Sonja always put her family and God at the center of everything she did. Her faith in the Lord was incredible and she passed that virtue onto her three children, through the pure love and devotion she had to them every day of her life. She will be deeply and incredibly missed by her family and countless friends that had the privilege of knowing her.

Sonja is survived by her husband of 38 years, Donald, her daughters, Zandra and Brianna, her mom, Margarita Frenzel, and her sister Michele Rosenberger. She was proceeded in death by her daughter, Arianna, her brother, David Castro, and her father, Jesse Castro.
