Shirley Roseman

April 27, 1936 — December 15, 2019

Shirley Ann Roseman was born to Hubert Thomas and Mamie Perdue Thomas in Princeton West Virginia during the depression when soup lines were long and jobs were no where to be found.
She told family members if they wanted to know how she grew up to watch  “A Coal Miner’s Daughter,” the movie based on the life of singer Loretta Lynn.
She was one of five children who grew up in a narrow holler where life was hard and coal dust blackened the bottoms of her feet as she walked the unpaved roads.
They lived in one of the small cabins scattered through the rugged mountains. Each year they looked forward to the one pair of shoes they would receive, a fact that made her appreciate everything she worked for.
Family members remember her strong will, honesty and fierce loyalty to her family and friends.
“She’ll be remembered for her strength and her wisdom,” her daughter, Diane Davis said. “And her willingness to always help someone in need.”
Shirley Ann Roseman died Sunday morning. She was 83.
She accepted the Lord at an early age, devoting her life to her faith that sustained her when troubled and when difficult days were present.
Shirley left home at the age of 15 to live with her older sister Virginia Bailey and brother-in-law Joel Bailey in Fairborn, Ohio.
In 1955, her friend Lorraine Roseman introduced Shirley to her brother Willard, an Airman in the Air Force. After a short courtship they were married in Norfolk Virginia.
She cared for her two children, Darrell and Diane, and the household when he was called out for no-notice deployments and two tours of duty in Vietnam.
During a 20-year career his job took them to California, Japan, Maryland and San Antonio, where he retired and built a ranch-style home on the Southwest Side of town.
She loved to cook large meals. Her favorite dishes were corn bread, pinto beans, Acadiana catfish and her daughter’s homemade hoagies with a chilled can of Coke.
But gardening was her first love. She had a knack for landscaping yards and maintaining green lawns that prompted people to ask if they could hire her to work their yards. She would tell them “you can’t afford me,” but always helped family members keep their property pristine, even when the blazing Texas heat shot above 100 degrees.
She would show up at her daughter’s house with a beach towel she kneeled on, sipping from a large cup of ice-cold soda while using house clippers to snip away any straggling blades of grass on the front lawn.
It wasn’t uncommon to hear the sounds of Country and Western music wafting from their house on Saturdays when cleaning was going on. The roster of classic singers she was partial to included Patsy Cline, Conway Twitty and Jim Reeves.
She joined Civil Service in 1972, working at Kelly Air Force Base in the office of classified technical orders.  She retired in 1997 and became a Tupperware manager who loved to host annual open houses where she would display the latest products and feed clients crowded in her living room.
The company recognized her regularly for her high volume of sales. In 1999 she received an all-expense paid trip to a Tupperware convention in Las Vegas.
In later years she doted upon her granddaughters, great-granddaughters who affectionately called her G’ma.  A night owl, her companion during the late hours was her beloved pet chihuahua, Sugarbabe.
Shirley found comfort worshipping with her close friends, content that one day she would see them again in that fabled far away place of glory.
She was preceded in death by her parents, son Darrell Roseman and husband Willard Roseman.
She is survived by her daughter Diane Davis, son-in-law Vincent Davis, sister Dolly Gaye Fitzpatrick, brother Cleadus Earl Thomas, granddaughters Michelle Scherney and Brittaney Parks and great-granddaughters Brooke Scherney, Kristin Scherney, Kennedi Davis-McArthur, Kensie Parks and Journey Parks.
