SFC Robert Edward Dukes, Sr., U.S. Army, Retired, passed away on December 18, 2008 at the age of 77 in Schertz, TX. Born in Laurel, Mississippi, Robert took an early interest in music where he learned to play the trumpet. Robert volunteered for military service at the age of 17 and served in the United States Army for 23 years. He held numerous Army band assignments while traveling around the world and eventually became the Director of the 5th Army Band at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. Robert was most devoted to his family and was an avid fisherman and lover of music. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bobbye Dukes; one sister, Larcenia Neville; two brothers, Aaron and James Dukes; and one son, Robert Edward Dukes, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elizabeth Ann Dukes; sister Lillian Hicks of Schertz, TX.; daughters, Gwendolyn Haynes (Ray) of Tacoma, WA; Lori Zone (James) of Dallas, TX; Karen Brice (Marvin) of Austin, TX; Jacqueline Ingram (Derrick) of Houston, TX; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one aunt, and numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 22, 2008 at Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. (with the family receiving friends from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.). Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 23, 2008 at New Creation Christian Fellowship, 8700 Fourwinds Dr., Windcrest, Texas 78239 with Bishop David Copeland officiating. Internment, with full military honors, will be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
