Sergio Shearer

December 4, 1939 — April 4, 2011

Sergio Shearer went to be with the Lord on the morning of April 4th at the age of 71. Sergio was raised in Weslaco, TX, married Lucinda S. Leyva and fathered three children: Andrea Rhea Shearer-Lee, Michael Leyva Shearer, and Kara Kristine Shearer (deceased). He graduated from North Texas State University. Simultaneously, he attended cosmetology school. After serving in the Army, Sergio opened a successful and prestigious salon, Sergios, in McAllen. In 1976, the Shearer family purchased Magic Valley Beauty College in San Juan, TX. He expanded that cosmetology school to todays University of Cosmetology Arts and Science (UCAS) with five campuses throughout South Texas. Sergio was a leader in the cosmetology industry. He was an appointee of Governor Ann Richards to the Texas Cosmetology Commission. He served as Vice President to the National Association of Cosmetology Schools; Director of Texas Association of Cosmetology Schools; Regional Director of Interstate Council of State Boards; and inductee into the Pivot Point Hall of Fame. He served on the Edinburg Housing Authority; Board Member of the Hidalgo County Special Olympics; Order of the Alhambra; and numerous other honors. In honor of his late daughter, Sergio co-founded the Kara Shearer Learning Center, a partnership with the Edinburg Housing Authority that serves underprivileged children. He was well known as a friend and supporter to numerous local, state, and federal elected officials throughout South Texas and the nation. Sergio was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus. He was a lifelong fisherman, hunter, and accomplished golfer. Today he is survived by his children, his sister Diana Fernandez, and five grandchildren: Bo, Hunter, and Kara Lee; Madelene and Betsy Shearer. On Friday, April 8th, a Rosary will be recited at 12:00 p.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. Services will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 16075 N. Evans Road, Selma, TX . Interment will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 11th at Highland Memorial Park, 6705 N. FM 88, Weslaco, TX.
