Roberto “Bob” Mario Garcia was born in McAllen, Texas on July 17, 1964. He was called home to glory, peacefully in his sleep, on January 10, 2020.
An adoring son, loving father and grandfather, supportive brother, uncle, friend, and decorated Army veteran, he will be forever remembered by his proud parents, Humberto & Virginia Garcia and loving mother Rosario Gomez, his wife, Sylvia Garcia, sons, Christopher Jaymes (Neomi) Arenas, Nicholas (Samantha) Fowler, Robert Michael (Faith) Garcia Jr. and their daughters, Aria and Alexis. He will also be remembered dearly by his siblings, Lori (Brian) Balcerak, Michelle (Noe) Mendoza, John Garcia, Ricardo (Melissa) Gomez, and several nieces, nephews and their children.
Roberto Garcia attended Rio Grande City High School, class of 1982. He was Student Council President, involved in Rattler Football, Student Government, and highly active in numerous other school clubs.
His incredibly helpful and positive demeanor, ability to create great camaraderie, and unwavering sense of patriotism, would fittingly prepare and drive him to make the ultimate sacrifice when he readily joined the U. S. Army to bravely serve our country and defend all that we hold dear. He served with a fervent loyalty for 21 years, including two tours in the Middle East —Desert Storm in Saudi Arabia and Iraqi Freedom — before finally retiring as Sergeant First Class.
Among his personal admirable qualities of valor, bravery, respect, and dedication, are his professional accolades, which include: Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd award), Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4th award), Army Achievement Medal (6th award), Meritorious Unit Commendation (2nd award), National Defense Service Medal (2nd award), Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon (3rd award), Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, KU-LIB-MDL (Saudi Arabia- 2nd award), KU-LIB-MDL (Kuwait), Driver & Mechanic Badge, and Basic Marksmanship. He was certainly a credit to the uniform he wore, and we are forever indebted to his honorable service and military legacy.
A jovial and passionate spirit, Robert's zest for life, desire for living it to the fullest, and appreciation for the finer things it had to offer, were fundamental to his charismatic energy which we will deeply miss. His soft spoken, calm, easy-going disposition and charming smile will be remembered fondly at every golf, poker, football game, and family gathering.
In lieu of flowers, the family will appreciate donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/donate .
A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 1:00pm, with the visitation beginning at 10:00am, at the Schertz Funeral Home. The interment will follow the Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road San Antonio, TX 78209.
