Robert Rayfield

Col. Robert E. Rayfield died of natural causes on Sept 10th. He was born in Fayetteville, NC in 1929. He grew up in Miami, FL and took his bachelor and masters degrees at the University of FL, Gainesville. He had a 30 year career in the Air Force as aircraft navigator flying B-26, B-47, B-52 aircrafts. Later he served at HQ Strategic Air Command and finally completed his career as director of public affairs, 5th AF & U.S. Forces in Japan. He received his Ph.D. in Journalism from The University of Texas at Austin, 1977. In 1983, he taught full time for Cal State Fullerton until he retired in 1993 and moved to San Antonio. He was an active, dedicated member of his church. His passion was flying and he owned and operated a Piper Cherokee well into his seventies. He was preceded in death by his brother Martin. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ann B.; his children; Ellen, Lorrie Ellstrom, Robin Richter, Thomas, Peggy, Beth and Pamela; grandchildren Jennifer, John Paul and Matthew Richter, Sonya and Jodi Ragland; nephews Mark and Glen. We will miss our precious husband, Dad and grandfather so very very much. A visitation will be held at Schertz Funeral Home Sept 14th from 5pm " 9pm. Funeral Services will be held Sept 15th at 10:00am at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church with burial to follow at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Veteran's group or his Church.
