Robert Doyen Phipps, age 77, passed away in Schertz, TX on May 1, 2023. “Bob” was born on August 5, 1945, in Camp Rucker, AL. He is preceded in death by his parents Robert Carl Phipps and Amy Virginia (née Doyen) Phipps. Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Julie, of which they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December 2022. He is also survived by his two sons Jason Phipps (Meredith) and Cody Phipps; his siblings Mary Ann Kemp, Diane Maddox, and Mike Phipps; and numerous nephews and a niece who affectionately knew him as “Uncle Bob.” Robert was blessed to be a grandparent to Hannah Phipps, Gavin Phipps, Ben Phipps, Ethan Phipps, Elle Phipps, and Evan Phipps.
Robert dedicated 37 years of his life to the United States Army, retiring after achieving the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 5 (CW5). An aviator at heart, he flew the UH-1 “Huey” for the 1st Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War. He later flew the UH-60 “Blackhawk” for several different units, to include 10th Special Forces Group. Bob was a proud recipient of the Purple Heart, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Legion of Merit medal as well as many other prestigious awards. He was a life member of the US Army Warrant Officer Association as well as the Bullwhip Squadron.
Robert had many hobbies. An avid vegetable gardener, he loved to plant all types of chili peppers. Bob also possessed an extensive model train collection which he kindly donated to the San Antonio Model Railroad Association. For this, he received an honorary lifetime membership. He took a great interest in the Indian Wars and spent some time practicing his rifle and pistol marksmanship skills.
Robert was loved and admired by many. He will be dearly missed, but we rejoice that he is finally united with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in his honor to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
