Robert Florstedt

Robert F. Florstedt, 92, died peacefully at home Jan. 16, 2010, surrounded by his family, due to complications of Parkinsons disease. He was born Jan. 14, 1918, in Ft. Jennings, Ohio, and was a man of strong Christian faith. A 1939 graduate of Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, he earned a masters degree from Ohio State University in 1941. After marrying Mildred Nicol in March 1942, he served from 1942 to 1944 in the U.S. Army. Attending the University of Texas on the G.I. Bill after the war, he earned a Ph.D. in Latin American studies. He was an active ham radio operator from the age of 15. Robert (Bob) was a U.S. Foreign Service officer in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Mexico City, and also had assignments in Panama, Venezuela, Guatemala, Vietnam, and Washington, D.C. After retiring, he and his family resided in Seguin, TX from 1971-1986. Predeceased by his first wife in 1982, he married Kaaren Halvorson Muelker at Faith Lutheran Church in 1984. They moved to Alpine, TX and lived there until 2004, when they relocated to Cibolo where he passed away under the care of Odyssey Hospice. Surviving are his wife; also daughters Sandra Florstedt of Palo Alto, CA; Carolyn McLeod of Rochester Hills, MI; Dr. Beth Snyder of Waynesville, NC; son James Florstedt of Lafayette, LA; and daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Scott McGauvran, of San Antonio; 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Also two sisters, Edith Raths of Winnipeg, MB, Canada, and Joan Wolford of Lincoln, NE. Also surviving are 3 step-daughters, Beth Muelker Martin of Cost, Kathy M. Kirtland of Pflugerville, and Ruth Muelker (Collins) of Austin, along with 2 step-grandsons. A brother, Luther, preceded him in death. At his request, no services were held; his ashes were interred at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
