Richard Strain

July 30, 1939 — January 19, 2018

Msgt. Richard "Dick" Harold Strain, USAF Ret., passed away on Friday, January 19, 2018 at his home in Cibolo, Texas. Richard was born on July 30, 1939 in Kell, Illinois to Charles and Myrtle Strain.

Richard grew up in a rural area outside of Salem, Illinois and graduated from Salem Community High School in 1957. He worked as a draftsman in St. Louis. Missouri for a short period then enlisted in the United States Air Force and began active duty on January 13, 1960. Over the next twenty years, Richard was stationed at Osan AFB in Korea, Maxwell AFB in Montgomery, Alabama, Ankara Air Station in Ankara, Turkey, Scott AFB in Belleville, Illinois, Richards-Gebaur AFB in Kansas City, Missouri, and finally at Randolph AFB in Universal City, Texas. Richard retired from active duty on January 31, 1980 and spent the next twenty years in civil service as a systems analyst. Richard was admired and respected worldwide by civilian systems and functional communities both in military areas and other branches of the federal government. Throughout his military and civilian careers, Richard was the recipient of many awards and commendations. While on active duty, he was awarded the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medals, and Meritorious Service Medals. Richard was extremely proud of his military career and of the time and service he gave to his Country. He retired from civil service in May 2000, and for a brief period did contract work for Lockheed Martin.

In his spare time, Richard loved woodworking, horseback riding, and spending time on his boat. He also devoted a great deal of his time to coaching baseball and was instrumental in establishing the Buffalo Valley Youth Association in Schertz, Texas.

Richard is preceded in death by both of his parents. He is survived by his children and their spouses; Richard B. Strain and his wife Keli, and Julie Sharp and her husband James; grandchildren Shelby Stephens, Richard B. Strain Jr., and Garrett Stephens; and his brother, Robert Strain.

A committal service with full military honors will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 9:45am, Shelter #4.
