Richard Andrew Leal, known by most as “Rick,” was summoned by God suddenly on the morning of Saturday, April 11, 2020. Rick was 61 years of age at the time of his passing. Rick was the son of Esperanza “Hope” and Richard Agapito Leal whom survive him. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Ray Anthony Leal. He is survived by his wife, Linda Leal. Rick also leaves behind his three sons, Patrick Michael [Sandy], Matthew Vincent [Amanda] and Mark Anthony, and his stepdaughter Lauren Javior. He was the proudest grandfather to Addison Mia Leal and James Tiberius Leal. He will be remembered by his brothers, Hector Joe [Jennifer] and Michael Anthony [Peggy], and sister, Sandra “Sandy” Ann [Mark]. His many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews left behind will remember him fondly.
Rick was born in Seguin, TX on December 2, 1958 before moving to his childhood home on Flint Rock Drive in San Antonio, TX. After graduating from Holmes High School, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Texas Lutheran College in 1981. In 1986, he moved to the city of Schertz where he raised his three boys, Patrick, Matthew and Mark, on Dimrock. He enjoyed his final years on Preston Pass in San Antonio with his wife Linda Leal and stepdaughter Lauren.
In his life, Rick was known by many things: dad, son, brother, grandpa, husband, coach, builder. Professionally, he identified with pride as a builder. Custom houses, golf courses, community development and swimming pools are among the countless projects that he leaves behind as a lasting reminder of the lives he touched. His best times were coaching his three boys in baseball at BVYA in Schertz and football with the Cibolo Creek Cougars. He volunteered countless hours at practices and many weekends preparing the fields so they were ready for the kids on gameday. He mentored a generation of players in the Schertz-Cibolo area. He will be remembered by hundreds in the community affectionately as “Coach Rick.”
His fandoms included the Cowboys, the Spurs, the Longhorns and, above all else, the Samuel Clemens Buffaloes; however, he cheered the loudest watching Patrick graduate from the University of Texas at San Antonio, Matthew graduate from Texas State University and St. Mary’s School of Law, Mark graduate from the University of Texas at Austin, and waited expectantly to watch Lauren graduate from Texas Lutheran University.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2020, from 4:00pm to 5:00pm and from 6:00pm to 7:00PM at the Schertz Funeral Home. Funeral service will be conducted on Monday, April 20, 2020, 10:00am also at the Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. All services will follow COVID-19 guidelines with no more than 10 guest at a time.
