Retired MSgt Ricardo "Rick" Martinez (USAF) passed away on 25 July at his home; 30 July would have been his 83rd birthday. He was the fifth son of Zacaríaz and Aníta Martínez of Raymondville, Texas. Married 29 November 1957, to the former Mitsuko Takaguchi of Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan. They have two sons, Michael John and Mark Daniel.
MSgt Martinez is survived by his wife, two sons and his sister Rosa Rendon. In addition, there are his seven grandchildren, Michael Jr, Zacaríaz, Mitsuko, Michelle, Danielle, Anna, Claudia plus eight great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and three sisters: Jesus, Oscar, Antonio, Eligio, Gilbert, Raul, Juan, Rodolfo, Carmen, Maria Eustolia and Ester.
In 1955, MSgt Martinez honorably began serving his country as an accountant in the United States Air Force for twenty-five years then continued with Civil Service; he amassed forty-five years of service with the Department of Defense. His assignment(s) included tours in CONUS, the Far East (Japan, Okinawa, Korea, ...) , Australia, Southeast Asia (Thailand, Vietnam...), Europe (including Iceland and Greenland), Central America and the Middle East. While in Turkey he and his Finance Team were evacuated to Greece at the beginning of Desert Storm. In addition he volunteered as the Spanish Language translator to the Casualty Assistance and Notification Team and as a crewmember for survivor recovery of downed aircraft during the Vietnam War.
He was an active sportsman and athlete as a pitcher on the base team and his squadron's teams; to include bowling, racquet ball and golf teams. Along with his wife, they were active volunteers for the Catholic Church, various fund raisers for the local orphanages, his assigned squadron, private and community organizations (ie. Latin American Club, Sons of Hawaii, ...).
And he still created quality family time with his family and extended families in Japan and Texas; hunting, fishing, camping, overnight and weekly family trips, picnicking, and big Barbeques. In his later years, you would find him working his Rocking RM ranch with his sons on their Charbray cattle and Nubian goats; along with their horses, chickens, turkeys, and Guinea hens. He also made time to support the Spurs, Cowboys, and Aggies.
MSgt Martínez was also active with the Good Sheperd Church and other Community Service Fund Raisers in Schertz, Cibolo and Universal City when he was stationed at Randolph AFB; where they purchased their home in the Val Verde Estate of Schertz.
