Rhea Haxton

August 17, 1929 — June 20, 2013

Rhea Marie Haxton, born August 17, 1929 in Martins Ferry, Ohio entered into rest on June 20, 2013 at the age of 83. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and teacher. Foremost, she was a caring mother and grandmother who truly enjoyed raising her children with an abundance of love and pride. She was dedicated to her profession as an art teacher and had a true love for her students as well. During her 27 year career her students received many art awards. Rhea, also, was considered a master teacher receiving several state awards from the Texas Art Educators Association for promoting Youth Art Month and art in the public schools. She received the state award for outstanding National Art Honor Society Sponsor of the year and the National Art Education Association named her Sponsor of the year for the nation. She was TAEAs nominee from Texas for the outstanding art teacher of the year for the nation. She was awarded a life membership in the San Antonio Art Education Association, and the Texas Art Education Association. Rhea was inducted into the Schertz, Cibolo, Universal ISD wall of honor as outstanding retired art educator. Watts Elementary School celebrates Youth Art month in her honor each year and has a designated Art wall with a plaque, her picture, and a thank you for the volunteer hours she spent after retirement teaching art in the elementary classes. She was a member of the Universal City United Methodist Church where she served as a mentor for the youth as they studied for their confirmation classes. Rhea was preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Paul Rutter. She is survived by her husband, of 60 years, Ron Haxton; son, Steven Craig and wife, JoAnn Haxton, step-grandson John Peacock and wife, Marsha; daughter, Roni Jean and husband, Tom; and grandchildren Christopher and Stephany Conard; daughter, Kim Marie and husband Gregg and granddaughters, Brittany, Elise, and Gillian Sanders; son, Jason Ross and wife Lori and grandchildren, Ross and Laurel Haxton; daughter, Darcy Ann Haxton-Jackson and grandsons, Payton and Cameron; brother, Paul Rutter and his wife, Martie and nieces Kelli, Trisha and Shanon; several nieces and nephews living in Ohio. Visitation will be from 6:00PM to 9:00PM on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Schertz Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at Schertz Funeral Home at 2:00PM on Sunday, June 23, 2013 with the Reverend Richard Young officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Universal City United Methodist Church or charity of your choice.
