SFC Reginald Burke, US Army (Ret.), 59, of Selma,TX, passed away on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, surrounded by his children, mother in love, Cherry Ann and lifetime family member and friend Dr. Ansonya and his house child, Simba. He was born in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, on July 20, 1964. He graduated from Murfreesboro High School in 1983.
Red, his affectionate nickname known by most family and friends, served as a dedicated soldier in the United States Army for over 20 years until his retirement on August 31, 2006. Known for his outstanding professional demeanor, Reggie was a model soldier whose motivation and excellence propelled him to the top of his peer group as a drill sergeant. SFC Burke performed his duties with professionalism, self-confidence, and pride, setting an example of leadership that inspired thousands of new soldiers. His tenacity, selfless service, and unwavering determination ensured mission success.
During his military career, Reggie was stationed in Bad Kreuznach, Germany; Fort Huachuca, AZ; Fort Leonard Wood, MO, Seoul, Korea; Fort Sam Houston, TX, and Fort Hood, TX. After retiring from the Army, he worked in the local ISD as an ROTC instructor, demonstrating the same dedication and earning the affection of his colleagues.
Reggie was a devoted father to Quentin and Aniyah, known for his strict yet loving approach, teaching his children the values of dedication, loyalty, and commitment. He was a cherished grandfather to his granddaughter Aliyah and a devoted caretaker to his dog, Simba. Reggie enjoyed outdoor activities, working out, fishing, and working on cars.
Reggie is survived by his loving life partner and friend of over 30 years, Dr. Ansonya Burke; his son, Quentin Jermaine Burke; his daughter, Aniyah Symone Burke; his granddaughter, Aliyah Burke; his brothers, Steven Vaughan (Maryland), Clarence Burke, II (Maryland), and Marvin Burke (Marion), North Carolina; and host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends across the United States.
He was preceded in death by his mother, late Audrey Mae Burke (deceased) and father Clarence Burke (deceased). Reggie will be remembered as an exceptionally honorable man who displayed courage, tenacity and strength to himself and those around him. Leaving behind a legacy of strength, dedication and love.
The family will receive friends prior to the service at the Schertz Funeral Home, beginning at 10:30 AM. A funeral service for SFC Burke will be held at 11:30 Friday, June 28th, Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, TX 78154 with Pastor Keith Graham officiating. Burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery. 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
