Ray L. Herdman was born on November 20, 1944 to Raymond and Mabel Herdman of McKees Rocks, PA. He graduated from Stowe High School in 1963 and enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1964. Ray passed away at his home in Schertz, TX at the age of 73 on September 17, 2018. Ray Herdman was a loving husband to his wife of 46 years, Sherrell (Sherry) Herdman. He is also survived by his sister Doris English, daughter Carolyn Hansen and husband Christopher Hansen, daughter Lisa Herdman. He was also the proud grandfather of Gabriel (17), Alyssa (16), and Evan (12). Ray's nephews and nieces will cherish memories of their loving uncle as well: Dan, Michael, and Steven Herdman; Jim Filbert, Lloyd and Jess English; Greg Boone, Janine Caruso, Diana Chumney, Carol and Wendy Walker; and Trish Waldon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mabel Herdman, and siblings: Kathleen Boone, Paul Walker, Helen Filbert, Eugene Herdman, Blanche and Thelma Carey, and Betty Shaeffer. Ray was an Inventory Management Supervisor for the Air Force for 20 years and was an aircraft Supply Technician for LSI at Randolph AFB for an additional 24 years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal among others. He was an active member of The Country Church and the "official, unofficial church greeter". He made sure to talk to everyone at church, and in any other place for that matter. He was a light of joy that knew no strangers. His goal was always to make sure others felt welcomed, and he lived to bring laughter to anyone and everyone he encountered. Often, this resulted in timely delivery of his classic "Dad Jokes" and other efforts to entertain restaurant servers and many other retail employees. Ray was the ultimate Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enthusiastically cheered on the Pittsburgh Pirates and Penguins as well. Some of his hobbies included building model ships, aircraft, classic cars, and jigsaw puzzles. He also appreciated a variety of music, from classic hymns to 50's & 60's Rock and Roll, including of course, the great Elvis Presley. Although he will be dearly missed, his family and friends rest in the knowledge that he has gone home to live with his Father in Heaven. Visitation will take place from 4:00pm to 8:00pm on Thursday, September 27, 2018 at the Schertz Funeral Home. A Celebration of Ray's life will be held at 10:30am on Friday, September 28, 2018, at the Country Church in Marion, TX with pastor Elton "Butch" Ikles officiating. Interment will follow at the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 1:45pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to The Country Church Bookstore or the American Heart Association.
