Portia Powell

November 3, 1941 — April 10, 2017

Portia Kaye Powell, 75, of Schertz, TX passed peacefully in her sleep April 10, 2017 and is now dancing among the fireflies.

Kaye was born November 3, 1941, in Ohio and is predeceased by her husband of 28 years, CMSgt Fred C. Powell Jr., USAF, Ret. Kaye is survived by her siblings: Roberta Louise (Susie) Chapman-Randez, Crawford Lionel (Sonny) Chapman II (Paula), Allan Burton Chapman, Donald Fred Chapman and Stanley Edward Chapman (Suki); her children: Melanie Jan (Jaffie) Crauder (Wayne) (son Gerald Ray Smith (Jamie)), Edward Shawn Jaffie III, Karin Lee Jaffie (Lori Howes) and foster daughter Amber L. Wilson; her husband's daughters: Yvette Arguijo, Yvonne Hobson, Valerie Shuttlesworth, and Marguerite (Powell) Rael (Robert); and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kaye was raised in Crawford Lionel "Chappy" and Alvira "Vi" (Wilson) Chapman's Air Force household. An extremely erudite lady, Kaye treasured learning her entire life, and adored all manner of flora and fauna. She graduated from UTSA in on May 8, 1993 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Anthropology. Kaye made several trips into Mexico on archaeological digs which opened the door to genealogy. Kaye began researching her genealogy and traveled to many locations in the United States to visit gravesite and libraries and meet people who had genealogy that matched up with her genealogical lines. As a result, she was able to research her genealogy back to the late 1600s.

Kaye was a single mom and worked very hard to provide for her children, but was able to retire early and really enjoy travel, friends and family life. Though Fred's health and then her health caused her to slow down her travel, her computer allowed her to continue her "travels" in what turned out to be a less inhibiting way. Kaye always found a way to achieve her goals. She truly lived life her way.
