Opal Gregory

August 8, 1922 — April 9, 2011

OPAL (OPIE) GREGORY, age 88, of Universal City, TX, went home to her Lord on Saturday, April 9 following an extended illness. Born on August 8, 1922 in Protection, Kansas, Opal was one of nine children of Gus and Eula Hardwick. She grew up in Kilgore, TX, and attended New London and Leveretts Chapel (Overton) High Schools. In 1941, she married Leroy Gregory, her high school sweetheart. The couple traveled extensively and lived in Lubbock, the Philippines, Wisconsin, Waco, and Randolph AFB/ Universal City during his Air Force career. They moved to the Metrocom area in 1966. Opal led a life of devotion to her husband, daughter, extended family and friends. She worked for many years at Randolph AFB in the Military Personnel Center, retiring in 1986. She was a talented folk art painter and cook, active in volunteer work and enjoyed dancing, gardening, entertaining and traveling. Opal was preceded in death by her beloved husband Leroy of 55 years, her parents and all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Michelle Cooke and husband, Wade of Gold Canyon, Arizona; grandson, Michael and wife, Julie Gregory and grandson, Gary Gregory. Services for Opal Gregory will be held at Universal City United Methodist Church, where she was an active member, at 11:30 AM on Monday, April 18 with interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to Universal City United Methodist Church (Building Fund), 90 Winn Ave., Universal City, TX 78148.
