Neal Mark Mathews, 78 years old, of Schertz, Texas went home to be with The Lord on Tuesday, June 15, 2021. He was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on December 13, 1942 to Thelbert M. and Leoma C. Mathews. He was raised on a farm in Harrisburg, Nebraska and was the second oldest of five children.
Neal married his high school sweetheart, Carole L. Anderson on December 17, 1960, just four days after his eighteenth birthday, and they celebrated their 60 th wedding anniversary this past December. They had three children, Tory Lynn, Quinn Mark and Tina Marie.
Neal spent many years farming and ranching in Harrisburg. He also worked for the Union Pacific Railroad and spent the majority of his career driving semi-trucks. Neal was known to all who knew him as a hard working, family man. He was so proud of his family and had a soft spot for each “baby” that has come along from his own, to his grandchildren and now great-grandchildren. He has had a special bond with some of their pets through the years, especially his “Sadie-girl” who we are sure met him on Tuesday morning when he went home. Their current dogs, Daisy and Mandy, also known as “the girls” will miss him just as much as the rest of us.
Neal had a great sense of humor and as his wife states with a smile, “always poking the bear”. Neal had a love of cars and at the top of his list he always talked about his first “love”, THE 58 Chevy Impala.
Neal is survived by his loving soul-mate and wife, Carole L. (Anderson) Mathews, his three children and their spouses, Tory Lynn (Ray Smock), Quinn Mark (Beth) Mathews and Tina Marie (Doug George), 10 Grandchildren: Darci (Josh) Gunthner, Courtney (Brian) Gardner, Ashley (Cameron Clausson) Bennett, Travis Mathews, Desiree Mathews, Tyler (Alodie) Mathews, Doug George, Lacey (Clay) Quinby, Luke (Magdalena) Sitorius, Katie (Jason) Martell and 23 Great Grandchildren, his sisters Marion (Bill) Neal and Linda Welch.
Neal was preceded in death by his parents, Thelbert M. and Leoma C. Mathews; his brothers, Carroll R. Mathews, Morris L. Mathews, and great-grandaughter, Arianna N. Bennett.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Schertz Funeral Home Chapel. A reception will follow at the Schertz Civic Center in the Bluebonnet Hall, 1400 Schertz Parkway..
In lieu of flowers, memorials donations may be made to the Neal Mathews Memorial Fund.
