Myrtle Neitzke Boenig , age 93, died on February 22, 2017, in Converse, Texas, following a long and eventful life. She is survived by her children, Shirley Boenig Rubinstein, of San Antonio, Texas, Tina Boenig Gilson, of San Antonio, Texas, with spouse Gordon Gilson, and Jeff Boenig, of Apex, North Carolina, with spouse Joan Spacek Boenig. She was so proud of her grandchildren, Aaron and Matthew Rubinstein, Eric and Michael Gilson, Stefanie, Sean and Andrew Boenig, and happy to be a great-grandmother to Amy and Katie Rubinstein.
Myrtle was born on March 23, 1928, on the family farm on Lower Seguin Road in Converse, Texas, to parents Robert Otto Alvin Neitzke and Meta Voges Neitzke. She graduated from New Braunfels High School. During WWII she worked at the Randolph Army Air Corps base post office, and then for almost 50 years, Myrtle worked in and later assumed ownership of the family's business, N & B Liquors on Pat Booker Road, Universal City, Texas. The business was opened by her father and her then-husband, Gilbert Boenig, and was a founding business in the new community of Universal City, eventually expanding to three locations. Myrtle retired and closed the business in 1994.
Myrtle was energetic and outgoing and never met anyone she couldn't strike up a conversation with given the chance. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren and proud of their accomplishments. They will always remember her with love as a woman who knew her mind and wasn't afraid of speaking it. Myrtle was proud to be a native Texas German speaker and was always learning and improving her German language skills through self-study, trips to Germany and conversation with German friends. Her greatest passion in life was travelling the world, with a particular love of Europe. She enjoyed many trips and cruises to Europe and Russia, Central and South America, Japan and Canada.
A visitation will be held from 6:00PM -8:00PM on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the Schertz Funeral Home stateroom.
