Miguel Avila Sr.

November 27th, 1947 – February 12th, 2025

Miguel “Mike” Avila Sr. was born on November 27, 1947, in Edinburg, Texas, and passed away on February 12, 2025, at the age of 77.

Mike had several things he liked doing such as watching sports, track and field was his favorite. He was a track and field athlete at Delano High School and Bakersfield College. He competed in long-distance events winning multiple awards from the relay and 4 mile runs, accumulating a box full of ribbons and medals.

Mike enjoyed drawing and painting. He would often take time to write a special note in a greeting card and add a special drawing in colored pencil or marker. He also had wonderful penmanship.

Mike enjoyed eating, one of his favorite things was hot dogs. He said he could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Mike was always happiest being with his grandkids. He would often take them to the park or pool. In the summer, you would see him loading up the grandkids to take them to Splashtown with an ice chest full of snacks. He would often bring a small toy or sweet treat every time he saw his grandkids. He enjoyed watching his grandkids play soccer and would attend their band and orchestra concerts. No matter what they were in, Mike was there to cheer them on.

He enjoyed watching his San Antonio Spurs games with Maria. He also enjoyed following high school football in the fall. He would religiously read the sports page at his local McDonalds to catch up on all the scores and stats.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Luis and Hilaria Avila, and brother Luis Avila Jr. Mike is survived by his wife Maria Gonzalez Avila, who he was married to for 54 years; his children, Bricedia Kortz, Monica Avila, Miguel Avila Jr., Benjamin Avila; eleven grandchildren, Mikaylia, Thomas, Gabriele, Matthew, Isaiah, Lilly, Morgan, Santiago, August, Zoey and Aleix, and great grandchild, Kyren; brother Charlie Avila; Sisters Yolanda Reyna and Alicia Huerta.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday February 20th, 2025, from 10:00 AM at Everyday Christian Fellowship Church at 950 Everyday Way, Cibolo, Texas 78108.

Services will be officiated by Pastor John Minton.
