Michael Alan Hatfield (“Mike”) of Garden Ridge, Texas, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the age of 67. Mike was the son of the late Richard Hatfield and Betty Lou (Cassem) Hatfield of Joliet, Illinois, and the oldest of their four sons. Mike is survived by his wife of 42 years, Donna Jean (Flynn) Hatfield of Garden Ridge, Texas, his children, Allison Hatfield Beard (William Duncan Beard) of Houston, Texas, Kaitlyn Marie Hatfield of Waco, Texas, Matthew Alan Hatfield of Garden Ridge, Texas, and his beloved pup, Bailey. Mike is also survived by numerous friends and family, whom he loved and cared for dearly.
After graduating from Lockport High School in Lockport, Illinois, Mike began a life-long career in manufacturing. In 1981, Mike took a leap of faith with his sweetheart, Donna, and moved to San Antonio, Texas. While he was not born in Texas, he often joked that he got here as quickly as he could. Mike was a firm believer in the strength of American manufacturing and machining, and worked on projects ranging from the Alamodome’s iconic roof supports and the Steel Eel rollercoaster at Sea World San Antonio, to hyperbaric chambers, shredders, and industrial fans. He was proud to serve as Vice President of Industrial Manufacturing at Technos, Inc. in Schertz, Texas.
Mike was a devoted family man and was involved in all of his children’s activities. He coached t-ball, coach- pitch baseball and softball, and basketball with the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Selma, Texas, and was an assistant coach with the Runnin’ Rebels AAU Basketball program in Schertz, Texas. When not coaching, Mike was his children’s number one fan – he attended countless baton twirling competitions, volleyball games, and tennis matches. Mike was also a dedicated Canyon High School Cougar Band Dad and spent numerous Friday nights and Saturdays supporting the band at football games and marching band competitions. He also enjoyed raising funds for the Canyon High School Band program through volunteering at their funnel cake booth at Wurstfest.
Mike was also extraordinarily proud of his children’s educational accomplishments, and you could almost always catch him sporting gear from Baylor University, the University of Houston, South Texas College of Law, Indiana State University, or the University of Memphis. He loved cheering on the Bears, Cougars, Sycamores, and Tigers any chance he could – especially if it was against the Longhorns, Aggies, or Horned Frogs. Mike also loved the San Antonio Spurs and was known for lighting candles during playoff runs.
Mike will always be remembered for his kindness, integrity, devotion, strength, and humor. He was always ready to lend a hand (or tool), and continually looked for the good in others. He will be greatly missed.
