Mary Phaneuf

"Greg" Phaneuf was born Mary Elizabeth Gregory on 4 Jan, 1920, in Norfolk, VA. When she finished high school, she attended Nursing School in Philadelphia getting her undergraduate degree in Nursing and becoming an RN. In 1943, she joined the Navy where she was given the nickname of "Greg", short for Gregory, and the name stuck ever since. While in the Navy, she served on the hospital ship USS Solace in the Pacific for 2 years during WWII. While on leave she met her Air Force husband Eugene in New York and, after a long distance courtship, they were married. While "Gene" continued in the Air Force, Greg stayed home and raised 3 sons. With a 30 year Air Force career, they traveled a lot with each son being born in a different city. Greg and Gene finally settled down on a ranch outside San Antonio where Gene raised cattle and Greg returned to Nursing. She complete her Master's Degree in Nursing Admin and was Director of Nurses for an assisted living facility in Schertz, TX, till her retirement at 80 years old. Her awards include "Who's Who of American Women" and "Admiral in the Texas Nany". Greg is survived by her sons-Robert, Richard and John; 3 grandsons, Marshall, Matthew and Michael; 1 granddaughter, Zoe and 2 great granddaughters, Margot and Estee. Graveside Services will be Friday, April 3, 2015 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery at 2:30PM with military honors.
