Mary Leathers Lockett was born in Mart, Texas on February 20, 1926 to Albert and Mary Leathers. She passed away on July 29, 2024 at the age of 98. Mary accepted Jesus Christ at the age of 14 and was baptized at First Baptist Church, Mt Calm, Texas where she grew up. She left life in the country at 17 years old to live in the city of Waco where she first worked at the Garment Factory; then on airplane panels during World War II; she worked for Owens Illinois Glass Plant; a bakery; nursing homes; and the State School of Texas. A move to Corpus Christi, then Houston, back to Corpus then to Waco before settling in Schertz gave her opportunity to make many lifelong friends in several churches. She served the Lord through the church over many years working with preschoolers, teaching elementary students, helping the youth choir, WMU, visitation, and helping with the sick and elderly. In later years, her support and heart were with the long-time love for Grace Temple Baptist Church of Waco. Her homebound ministry kept in touch with people by sending cards and notes for varied occasions.
On December 22, 1946 she married William H. (Bill) Lockett in Waco, Texas and was married 56 years until his death September 14, 2002. Mary is preceded in death by parents Albert and Mary Leathers of Mt. Calm, seven brothers, and four sisters. She is survived by her daughter Charlotte and husband Rohan Pierce of Schertz, Texas; daughter Sandra and husband Gary Burnett of Ft. Worth, Texas.
