Mary Atiee

September 13, 1924 — October 25, 2012

Mary J. Atiee, born on September 13, 1924, went to be with her husband and parents October 25, 2012, at the age of 88. Her beloved husband of 53 years, George Atiee, preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Helen and Hector Vallejo, Sylvia and Carlos Garcia, Margaret and Abel Garza; daughter Patricia Atiee and Ruben Reyna; sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. George J. and Suzanne Atiee, Michael and Kim Atiee; grandchildren, Claudia Ramon, Marco Vallejo, Melissa Rice, Cynthia Cox, Mark Garza, Joey, Elise, and Nicholas Atiee and Kasey and Austin Atiee; great-grandchildren, Madeline and Andrew Ramon, Emma and John Paul Vallejo, Salem, Catalina and Alan Rice and Gwen and Nathan Cox. Mary was the matriarch of the Atiee clan. She hosted countless family gatherings and holiday events, always cooking more than enough to fill everyones belly. She was a master of Mexican and Lebanese food, but everything she cooked always had a full helping of a mothers love. As the authoritarian of the household, she made sure that all her children learned to cook, clean, iron, behave and pray. Besides raising her own children, she also spent many days caring for her grandchildren in her home. They always wanted to go to Momos house. Outside the home, she was a faithful parishioner at Little Flower. She volunteered as a Girl Scout leader, a home room mother, member of the PTA and for many years she was the cotton candy queen at the church festivals. Although she could rule with an iron hand, her best quality was her ability to sense when someone was in need of a mothers touch. Her ability to give comfort with a hug, a gentle kiss or meal (frequently all three) could brighten the darkest day. She was devoted to the Blessed Mother and strived to emulate her by the way she lived her life. Those who knew her best would say she succeeded. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 30, 2012, at Schertz Funeral Home, from 2:00PM-9:00PM, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00PM. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 31, 2012, at The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower, 1715 N. Zarzamora, at 10:30AM. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Garcia for his loving and devoted care, Fr. Jim for his kindness and prayer, caregiver Irene Vasquez who became part of the family and the wonderful staff from Evercare Hospice, Alicia Hysaw RN and Debra Harlech RN; Christopher Whitaker, LVN and Ralph Rocha LVN, Molly Trevino, CNA and chaplain Susie Roysten.
