Marcus Gamble

September 3, 1930 — June 21, 2016

? ?M. H. "Buddy" Gamble, age 85, passed away June 21, 2016, at his home in Schertz, TX. Born in San Antonio September 3, 1930, to parents Dorothy McCoy Sharp and William Howard Chiles, Buddy and his family lived all of his childhood and adolescence in the Harlandale community. His mother's second husband, John Ritchey Gamble, adopted Buddy and his older sister when they were in their early teens. Buddy was a 1947 graduate of Harlandale High School, where he excelled not only as a student class leader, but also as a standout in varsity football, basketball, and baseball.

At age 18, he was recruited as a pitcher for Class C Minor League Baseball, playing for two seasons in 1948-1949 for farm teams affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals in St. Joseph, MO, and in West Frankfort, IL. After his stint in baseball, he returned to San Antonio, where he married Nathalea Ferguson Gamble in 1950. A move to Corpus Christi followed, where he spent many years employed in construction equipment sales for the Ingram Equipment Company and then later the Roy Klossner Equipment Company. While in Corpus Christi, Buddy and his wife became parents to daughters Judy and Nancy. They were dedicated members of Bethany Christian Church, where he served as a board member, deacon and elder, and also sang in the choir. In the late 1960's, he joined Centex Cement Corporation, where he served as Executive Vice President over a large cement plant along the Corpus Christi ship channel.

In 1975, Buddy returned with his second wife, Billie Kate "B.K." Johnson, to San Antonio, where they enjoyed a long marriage; subsequently, he wore the hat of small business owner, establishing his own construction equipment sales and rental business, Gamble Equipment Co., Inc., in southeast San Antonio.

A scratch golfer, Buddy was an excellent player, participating in many municipal and private club golf tournaments throughout his life during his residence in both Corpus Christi and San Antonio. Buddy and B.K. also became avid bridge players, enjoying this pastime with many friends. Both were active members of the congregation at Oak Meadow Methodist Church.

Losing his wife last November after caring for her during her long chronic illness, as well as his younger daughter this past March when she succumbed to cancer, Buddy continued to live independently in his Schertz apartment. He could not have done so, however, without a team of supporters, including all his physicians, home health care providers, and other medical professionals. Special gratitude is extended to his primary ‘caregivers and guardians'-- Lane Johnson, Tyler James and Jerad Moheit.

Buddy was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy S. Hocker and his step-father Bob Hocker; his wife Billie Kate Gamble; former wife Nathalea Ferguson Gamble; daughter Nancy Gamble; and sister Ida Joel Gamble Pape. Survivors include his daughter Judy Gamble; step-son Lane Johnson and wife Martha; step-daughters Donna K. McKinney and Sue A. Johnson; Nancy's children, grandchildren Allison, Bethany and Tyler James; and Lane's children, step-grandchildren Salena Washington and her husband Darius, and Marisa Moheit and her husband Jerad; his sister Ida Joel's children, nieces Sue Ann Pape and Jo Lynn Pape Lopez, and nephew William Wayne Pape; numerous other extended family members, and many friends.

Visitation is scheduled for 5:30 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2016, with a Memorial Service to follow afterward at 6:00 pm, at Schertz Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Scharmann presiding. Donations in his honor to the charities of your choice are appreciated.
