Madge Owen
July 1, 1925 — April 30, 2014
Madge Annease Mangum White Owen passed away April 30, 2014. Madge was born July 1, 1925 in Poteet, Texas to Charlie and Viola Mangum. She graduated from Cotulla High School and married Carl White on November 11, 1945. She helped her husband run his business, Carl White's Phillips 66 Service Station, on Goliad Road in San Antonio. A high point of her early life was going on a trip to Florida in 1959 that Carl won from having the most improved sales for Phillips 66 in five states. After raising her six children, she began working full-time in 1964. She worked in the San Antonio Independent School District as a library aide for 21 ½ years. Highlights of her retirement years were going on a weeklong cruise with her two oldest daughters and a trip to Banff, Canada with her youngest son. After the death of her first husband, she met and married Walter Owen, who preceded her in death. She remained active in her church and family activities throughout her life. She kept her mind active until her death by reading her Bible and devotionals everyday, reading other books, and doing crossword puzzles and word searches. She was an avid fan of the Highlands Owls, Marion Bulldogs, and Baylor Bears. She led an exemplary Christian life, was kind to everyone, and said that strangers were just friends she hadn't met yet. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Fred D. Mangum; her sister, Evelyn Mae Franks; her husbands; and her sons-in-law, Ralph Hooge and Paul Gartner. She is survived by six children: Carole Hooge; Charlyn Gannaway and husband Richard; Beverly Doty and husband Greg; Burke White; Beth Gartner; and Brian White and wife Cheryl; thirteen grandchildren: Lori Smith, Leah Jesse, Eric Hooge, Rick Gannaway, Chris Gannaway, Charles Gannaway, Kristin Barnes, Karlie Baker, Korinne Taylor, Amanda Franklin, Ashley Gartner, Natalie White, and Lindsay White; eighteen great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandsons and grandsons-in-law, Jeremy Hinton, Tyler Baker, and Trenton Taylor.
