Madeline Eager

July 25, 1921 — September 14, 2015

Madeline Isabelle (Chauret) Eager, 94, died in her sleep from natural causes at her Schertz home on Monday, September 14, 2015. The eleventh child of Catherine (DeLorge) and Frank Eager, she was born at home in Essexville, Michigan on July 25, 1921. She was the first in her family to graduate high school; her St. James classmates nicknamed her "Dimples" and voted her prettiest of her class of 1939. She loved to flirt, but she always cared more for the rosary than the looking glass. She loved tap dancing, jitterbugging, and lovingly teasing and jesting with her family when they least expected it. Madeline and her (ex) husband, Col. Colin Chauret, USAF Ret., were married on the 4th of July, 1943. They had nine children during 11 tours, which included assignments in post war Germany and Greece. Tough work for any woman, Madeline handled her duties and raised her family with grace and wit. Colin remarked that Madeline was the best military wife and mother anyone could ask for and was "sharp as a tack". Madeline was also very, very funny; when the boisterous Colin called upon Madeline to leave an Officer's Club party with the remark, "Come on, Mother of Nine!" Madeline didn't miss a beat, replying in front of a host of Air Force generals, "Alright, Father of Five". The beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was admired for her dedication to the Lord, her kindness, her beautiful voice, her love for children, her joie de vivre and her delicious cherry pies. "A little bit of her remains in all of us, I hope - we'd be blessed," remarked granddaughter Melissa Nix, noting her grandmother's extraordinary qualities. Madeline is survived by her older sister Blanche Schoof of Bay City, MI; her ex-husband Col. Colin Chauret of San Antonio; her daughters Sharon (Boyd) Nix of Williamsburg, VA; Margo (Karl) Franz of Baltimore; Debra Aishman of Wimberley; Maria (Arthur) Martinez of Tucson; Kateri Chauret and Mary (Beaux) Chauret, both of San Antonio; former daughter-in-law Susan Chauret of San Antonio; sons Keith (Sheila) Chauret; Michael Chauret; Mark (Patrice) Chauret, all of San Antonio; 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and caregiver Margaret Evans. Madeline was preceded in death by her beloved parents and eleven siblings. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 pm, Sunday, September 20 during visitation (Holy Rosary recitation at 6pm) at the Schertz Funeral Home, 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, TX 78154. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 1065 E. Live Oak Rd, Schertz, TX 78154, at 10am, Monday, September 21. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Catholic Charities.
