Mabel Singley

February 5, 1919 — June 22, 2014

Mabel Lorraine Singley, born on February 5, 1919 in the coal mining region of Pennsylvania, passed away on June 22, 2014 in Schertz, Texas, at the age of 95. When she was in the 6th grade, Mabel quit school and worked cleaning houses to earn money to help support her family. In her early 20's, at her sister's wedding, she met her sister's husband's best man. Shortly thereafter they were married. Once the first son came along, she no longer worked outside the home. Her family was the most important thing to her. Living in a farm area of Pennsylvania, once the youngest son started school, she would work in the fields picking potatoes, tomatoes, and other vegetables. Her pay was little, but the farmers usually found a way to give her vegetables along with a few dollars. Her children didn't have the fancy and latest toys to play with, but on special occasions, like birthdays, Christmas, Easter, they always received something. They were always well fed and clean. They were taught manners and respect. This carried through to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Even though times were hard when the children were young, her family always came first. Her children ate first whether at home or a family gathering. As children, whenever our parents went out, the children went with them. Date night was actually family night. She always took time for her family her whole lifetime. Mabel later retired from Montgomery County Rehab Center in Montgomery County, PA. She was an avid reader, a great cook, and enjoyed playing bingo, as long as she won. She was fun to be around and earned love and respect of everyone she met, from the people she worked with to the doctors and nurses who took care of her. She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Singley, Sr., grandson, Steve Singley, and siblings, Pearl Stauffer, Sivilla Suber, George Stauffer, Sarah Loughery, Raymond Stauffer, Mary Sullivan, Edgar Stauffer, and Grace Rimer. Survivors include her sons, John "Jack" F. Singley, Jr. and his wife, Jeanette, of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Donald E. Singley and his wife, Barbara, of Marion, Texas; grandsons, Scott Singley of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Mark D. Arnold of Greenwood, Louisiana; great-grandchildren, Meagan N. Arnold, and Matthew R. Arnold of Middleburg, Florida. The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 26, 2014, from 5:00PM-9:00PM, at Schertz Funeral Home. The Graveside Service will be on Friday, June 27, 2014, at 2:30PM, at Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Pastor Neil Kibbe officiating.
