Lt. Col. Richard J. Dick Adams (USAF Ret.), a resident of Schertz, passed away May 22, 2009. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1929 and spent most of his childhood in Lodi, California working with his Dad on a dairy farm and his Mom in the Adams Bakery. He married the love of his life, Fleta in 1951 and they traveled the world while raising three children, Jeanette, Richard and Eileen.Dick proudly served his country for 38 years in the United States Air Force. Starting as an airplane mechanic, he went through OCS and became a Pilot. Dick had an illustrious career as an Instructor Pilot, a Wing Commander and Deputy Base Commander earning numerous awards including several Meritorious Service Medals. However, Dicks greatest achievement was the love and respect he was given by all those who knew him.He is survived by his wife Fleta, son Richard S. Adams of Clovis, New Mexico and daughter Eileen L. Adams of Schertz, Texas. Dick Adams is also survived by his grandchildren, Raina Berner, Ilia Jackson, Travis Brown, Chalena Richardson, Michael Adams, Danielle Adams, James Farr II, and great-grandchild Layla Jackson. A memorial service will be held at the Schertz Funeral Home at 1pm on Wednesday, May 27, 2009, and followed by a graveside service at Ft. Sam National Cemetery at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in his honor to his favorite charity the Salvation Army.
