Lauren “Laurie” Lengyel, Lieutenant Colonel, USAF (ret.), a long-time resident of Schertz, TX, died from complications of a stroke on April 27th 2022.
Laurie was born in Waterbury, CT, son of Joseph and Elinor Lengyel. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through the Aviation Cadet Program in 1958 in Greenville, MS, where he met the love of his life, Margaret Gardner, and married in 1959. Laurie served all over the world for 33 years in the Air Force, flying fighter, transport, and trainer aircraft.
On August 9, 1967, Laurie’s RF-4C was shot down over North Vietnam, and he was a Prisoner of War in Hanoi until his release in March 1973.
Laurie was a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan. He loved golf and traveling with his wife, Marge, and he never met a dog he didn’t like. Laurie was blessed with a wonderful family and many friends. He was kind, and humble, and he was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Laurie is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret, and children Joe (Sally), Toddy, Greg (Diane), and Dan (Angie), ten grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the outstanding staff in the ICU at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, for their care and compassion during Laurie’s final days.
Visitation will be at the Schertz Funeral Home on May 25, 2022 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be at Schertz Funeral Home, May 26th, at 9:45 am, and Laurie will be interred in Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery on May 26th 2022 at 1130 am.
