Larry W. Franklin, 75, passed away with family and friends by his side at Transplant Center, University Hospital (San Antonio, TX) on Wednesday, May 30, 2018.
He leaves his wife of 40 years, Dee (Eudelia) Franklin, his son Jody Franklin, Sister Cynthia, Brother Richard, and many, many close family members and friends. He is preceded in death by his Brother Alan and Sister Naomi.
Larry was born and raised in Illinois, the son of the late Walter and Mable Franklin.
After graduating high school in St Petersburg, FL, he joined the U.S. Air Force at the age of 17 and proudly served 27 years as a weather observer/forecaster, and Vietnam veteran. He loved the USAF and was the ultimate professional, providing weather forecasts which were vital to the safety and lives of USAF aircrew members. While stationed at Bergstrom AFB, TX, he met and married his beloved wife Dee in 1978. After his Air Force career he served 13+ years as a supply supervisor at Keesler AFB, MS, billeting office. He served as a volunteer at the Keesler, AFB, Chapel office, and was a volunteer for Governor Haley Barber's, and President George W. Bush's political campaigns. He also served the citizens of Biloxi by volunteering to drive homeless citizens from the community shelters to their job site.
Shortly after hurricane Katrina in 2005 Larry and Dee moved to Schertz, TX. He continued serving his community on the Schertz Citizen's Patrol, the Transportation Safety Action Committee (TSAC), as a voting precinct monitor and judge for Guadalupe County, and as a board member of the Savannah Bluff home owners association. He also volunteered at the Randolph AFB Chapel information office, at the retiree affairs information office, as a member of the Catholic Men of the Chapel (CMOC), and served as a Eucharistic Minister.
Larry loved cars, music, movies, reading, trivia, collecting knives, telling jokes and most of all his beloved wife Dee, family and friends.
Larry and Dee thank all their family and friends for the prayers and support! Special thanks also go to the medical staff at the Transplant Center, University Hospital, San Antonio, TX.
Visitation services will be held Friday, June 15 with visitation from 5-9 PM, and Rosary at 7PM at the Schertz Funeral Home 2217 FM 3009, Schertz, Texas, 78154-2703, (210) 658-9224.
A Mass will be held Saturday, June 16 at 10 AM, Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 1065 E. Live Oak Road, Schertz, TX, 78154, (210) 658-4350. Following the Mass there will be a Celebration of Life at 11 AM, Schertz Civic Center, 1400 Schertz Parkway, Schertz, Texas, 78154.
Military Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 1 PM (arrive @ 12:45, no earlier), Ft. Sam National Cemetery (Shelter No. 1), 1520 Harry Wurzbach Road, San Antonio, Texas, 78209.
In Iieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Larry's memory to St Jude Children's Hospital, Shriner's Children's Hospital, Disabled American Veterans (DAV), or Mass/Novenas in Larry's name.
Larry, truly loved life, his wonderful wife Dee, family, and friends! He lived a life that was an example for all who were blessed to know him. No one should say goodbye to Larry but only "see you later Larry", for we will surely see him again in heaven...
