Kenneth Wayne Volker was born June 29, 1936 in our Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C. to Fred and Ruby Volker. He completed their family of 5 being welcomed by older brother, Jack and sister, Dot.
Two months before graduating high school, his best friend Gary quit school and joined the Air Force with Ken “to keep him out of trouble”. This began his career as an Athletic Director and body builder, training both American and Vietnamese troops at Randolph Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX; Hickam AFB, O’ahu, HI and the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.
During his early years in the military while on a temporary assignment at Lake Whitney he met the love of his life, Joann Rodda. After returning to DC on leave he could not stop thinking about that beautiful young woman he had left in Texas, so caught flight back and then hitch-hiked to Whitney and married her. They shared a love that lasted more than 64 years. A daughter, Rhonda Gayle and son Michael Wayne were soon added.
He Loved His Family! He worked tirelessly to be not only patriarch but advocate, husband, dad and made even the hard times an adventure for those he loved.
After retiring from the United States Air Force in 1975 he went on to open the first co-ed gym in Universal City. Although he received numerous commendations in the Air Force and successfully pursuing his antique tool collecting---nothing meant more to him than his wife Joann and his children finding love and happiness.
Joann cared for him the last few years, lovingly spoiling him at home as his health deteriorated. They continued to laugh and live their story until Ken peacefully passed away on the evening of June 3 rd .
Ken is survived by his wife of 64 years Joann; daughter Rhonda Wilcox (Alan), son Michael Volker (Cynthia), five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and multiple friends and extended family to whom he left a lasting, legacy of love.
“I am grateful he lived a long life, full of love...What more could anyone ask for?”
Funeral services will be held on Monday June 8, 2020 at 2:00 pm at Schertz Funeral Home. Interment will be held at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
