Jules “André” Van Geem “Coach Van Geem,” 71 of Schertz, TX passed from this life into eternal life on Thursday April 13, 2023, in San Antonio, TX while in the presence of his loving wife.
André was born August 16, 1951, in The Hague, Netherlands. He was the first-born son to Beatrice Guerry Van Geem and Rudy E. Van Geem. At the age of seven years old the family immigrated to Amarillo, Texas and at the age of fifteen he attended W.B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi. After graduating from high school, he attended Northwestern State University in Natchez, Louisiana on a track scholarship and returned to Texas where he continued his education at Southwest Texas State University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in 1973 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in German with a minor in History in 1980. As part of his studies, he also completed an internship study program in Germany and attended the University of Texas where he took German and Dutch courses.
André began his career in teaching at Del Valle High School with Del Valle I.S.D. where he taught high school courses in German, social studies and history. Due to his passion of sports/athletics he became a head cross country and track coach for boys and girls from 1981-2007. In 2007, he was offered a position at Karen Wagner High School in Judson I.S.D as a Head Boys’ Cross Country/Assistant Track Coach where he also taught German and world history. He retired from Judson I.S.D in 2019.
Having been an accomplished athlete himself, Coach Van Geem loved all sports. He ultimately found his passion in coaching high school athletes in cross country and track. In thirty-five years of coaching he produced numerous district champions, regional qualifiers, and state qualifiers.
André was a member of Everyday Christian Fellowship in Cibolo, TX and wanted to be remembered as a man who loved God and his family. The family would like to extend gratitude to the congregation for their ongoing prayers and support.
André was predeceased in death by his father, Rudy E. Van Geem, and brother Pat Van Geem. André is survived by his loving wife of twenty years, Amelia Van Geem, his stepdaughters Lori Perez, Angel Laurio (Elmer), and Jackie Gregory (Michelle), fourteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his mother Beatrice Guerry Van Geem, his brother-in- law Alan Coy, his sister Beatrice Balli (Nick), his brother Edgar Van Geem (Sandra) and his sister Nancy Ilse, (Michael), six nieces and nephews, and five great nieces and nephews.
The family wants to extend sincere appreciation for André’s medical team who provided excellent and compassionate care in his treatment journey. Special thanks to his Oncologist, Dr. Rohit Kapoor, MD and his entire staff, the ARA Pluvicto treatment team in Austin, TX, GenesisCare, and Methodist Hospital Northeast ICU Unit.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Jules “André” Van Geem will be held on Saturday, the 6th of May 2023 at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception at Everyday Christian Fellowship at 950 Everyday Wy, Cibolo, TX 78108
