Juanita Kardys

Juanita Kardys, 89, of Cibolo, passed away on Wednesday, February 15, 2012. She was born June 19, 1922, to Semuel Eugene Mixon and Eva Cecelia Hill in Watson, Louisiana. She was the fourth of ten children born to the Mixons. In 1941, she met a young airman, Mack Kardys. He courted her for about four months before he went off to war in the South Pacific. They wrote letters for two years, and three days after returning to Baton Rouge in 1944, they married. Mack and Boo as he called her, had five children. Four years before Mack's retirement from the Air Force, they bought property in Cibolo, where they built an airport, Cibolo Aviation Corporation. Juanita was a savvy business woman, and she continued managing the airport, even after Mack's passing in 1992. She assisted in the building and rebuilding of many airplanes, and was also an amazing seamstress, a talented artist, and a fantastic cook. Juanita was very involved in Good Shepherd Catholic Church; in fact, she and Mack helped establish it. She used her talents to glorify the Lord making banners for the church and cooking for parish dinners, picnics, and bereaved families. So many people were blessed by her in her younger years when she often took care of terminally ill people and brought her cheerfulness to their final days, or to shut-ins that no one else cared about. Juanita loved serving people and the Lord. She was involved in The Ladies Altar Society, The Knight of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, and The Red Hatters Club. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Mack, her daughter Patricia, and granddaughter Heather, four sisters, and two brothers. Juanita is survived by her children, Richard and wife Jessie Kardys, Kenneth and wife Debbie Kardys, Daniel and wife Rita Kardys, Diane and husband Gary Birdwell, and son-in-law Ted McKinnon. She is also survived by her siblings, Neil Mixon, Kathleen Blanchard, and Carolyn Marcotte. She had 13 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She also left behind a wonderful caregiver that she adored, Liz Wensjoe. We want to thank her for Moms care and the beautiful friendship they shared. We also want to thank Evelyn Niland for being the best friend Mom could have ever had. (She loved you and all of the fun times you had.) Special thanks goes out to Patty Q, and the staff of Odyssey Hospice, for their constant care and support over the last year. You made a difficult time easier to bear. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 17, 2012 at the Schertz Funeral home, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be recited at 6:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Good Shepherd Church in Schertz, TX. Interment will follow at Selma Cemetery #2. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Good Shepherd Catholic Church Building Fund or to the Charity of Your Choice.
