Joseph Potempa, Jr.

MSgt Joseph A. Potempa, Jr., USAF (Ret), born on February 11, 1942, passed away on May 28, 2014, at the age of 72. Joe served as a councilman for the city of Schertz from 1990-2001. He is a former Police Officer and Chief of Police of Selma. Later, he retired from Civil Service with DECA at Randolph Air Force Base. Joe was a 4th Degree Knight with in Knights of Columbus at the Good Shepherd Council 6358. His deep involvement within the community kept him busy as he was a life member of the Schertz VFW Post 8315 as well as a member of the St. Michael's Society of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Selma. Survivors include his wife, Patsy Potempa of Schertz, TX; son, Daniel Potempa of Mt. Olive, NJ; daughter, Kim Potempa-Niedosik, of Rockaway, NJ; brother, Daniel L. Potempa of Belvidere, IL; step-children, Sherrie Watt and her husband, Don, Tracy Ryan, and David Marbach; grandchildren, Pamela Niedosik, Danielle Niedosik, and Brandon Potempa; step-grandchildren, Zachary and Meghan Watt. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, from 9:00AM - 9:00PM, with the family receiving friends from 5:00PM - 9:00PM, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00PM, at Schertz Funeral Home. The Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, June 5, 2014, at 9:00AM, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery with United States Air Force Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph's name to St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
